Hjorths Fabrik

KNOWLEDGE-SHARING SESSION 3

TITLE: Reconsidering the past to form a sustainable future
CONTENT: Since the 18th century, the island of Bornholm in Denmark has been a centre of industrial ceramic production due to its rich natural resources, large clay deposits and granite. Even after the natural resources have been exhausted, the legacy of generations of making has a palpable resonance on the island. These post-industrial and heritage sites are now part of the recognizable cultural identity of Bornholm.

Explore the enduring legacy of Bornholm’s ceramic industry with a tour of Hjorths Fabrik, a standout industrial monument. Learn how historical practice influences sustainable approaches in modern ceramics from leading ceramicists and curators. The session concludes with a panel discussion about industry, alternative design and future ceramic practices.
Hosts and presenters: Bachelor Anna Maria Sand Jensen and museum leader Karina Skibby. Panellists include ceramicist Jari Vesterinen (Finland),   Linda Viková & Simona Janišová  (Slovakia), senior curator Sarah Rothwell (National Museums Scotland, UK), and curator Dr. Lisa Hockemeyer (Politecnico di Milano, Italy & Kingston University, London, England)

INTERPRETATIONS OF SOIL

Myths in different cultures tell us that the first humans were created from soil. The word ‘humus’ has shared roots with the word ‘human’, and christian burial rituals often conclude with variations on ‘Earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust.’ Many contemporary artists reflect on the precarious status of soil and its aesthetic and political implications in works that take on environmental, mythological/narrative and personal issues. Acknowledging both the sculptural and symbolic potential of soil, they construct objects and map and listen to the earth in order to tells its stories and explore the sensuous qualities of soil.
